Today is International Mother Language Day – a day that honors linguistic and cultural diversity around the world. In fact, some words are so closely tied to a particular culture that they can hardly be translated, if at all. In the video, our colleagues share a few examples.
Especially today, it becomes clear that language is so much more than a means of communication. It also conveys perspectives and emotions. When a language dies out, certain expressions disappear with it. There are words so deeply connected to a culture, a history, or a way of life that they can scarcely be translated—or not at all. Employees at Pepperl+Fuchs around the world give a few exciting examples in the video:
- Kuchisabishii (口寂しい) – “Lonely mouth” / Snacking not because you’re hungry, but because your mouth is bored. (Japan)
- Che – A word to get someone’s attention or express surprise. (Argentinia)
- Malemolência – A uniquely Brazilian mix of laziness, charm, rhythm, swagger, and laid-back elegance. (Brazil)
- Gotong-royong – “Lifting a burden together” (Malaysia) / Coming together as a community to help one another.
- Batiburrillo – A random, chaotic mix of unrelated things. (Spain)
- Simunye (Zulu) – “We are one.” (South Africa)
- Feierabend – “Celebration evening” – The joyful end of the workday. (Germany)
- Jiā yóu (加油) – “Add oil” – An enthusiastic “You’ve got this!” (China)
- Cantinflear – To speak in a nonsensical way without really saying anything. (Mexico)
- Cuci Mata – “Washing the eyes” / Window shopping or enjoying a nice view (Indonesia)
- Jabuticaba – A Brazilian berry so unique, the original name travels with it. (Brazil)
- Qué chimba – Something awesome or amazing. (Colombia)
- Thần thái – The vibe, aura, or presence someone brings into a room. (Vietnam)
- Saudade – A deep feeling of longing or nostalgic love. (Brazil)
International Mother Language Day is therefore also a reminder that every language carries unique meanings that cannot simply be transferred into another—and that is precisely why they are worth protecting.
